We are very pleased to offer Synthetic Flies, Flies with an "Edited Hackle" & Catch the Hatch by John Betts. This book aspires to re-introduce three of John Betts' early works to a new generation of fly tiers and anglers. The originals were privately published and have become rare gems in fly tying literature. I hope John's creativity and artistry will inspire you as it has me.
 
Synthetic Flies (1980) explores the use of synthetic materials and introduces innovative materials along with tying and coloration techniques.
 
Flies with an 'Edited Hackle' (1982) examines alternative materials and techniques to traditionally hackled dry flies.
 
Catch the Hatch (second edition, 2000) was published as a stream-side guide to mayfly duns. Although reprinted here in gray scale, fly tiers will find the descriptions, sizes and coloration an invaluable aid to tying imitations.

    Under that there river bank
    There lies a big fat trout,
    And I have tried every trick in the book
    Just to get that ol' trout out.

    I have tried with my hands to tickle him
    And I have even used a fly,
    But that fish just won't come out
    No-matter what I try.

    With a big juicy worm I have tried to tempt him
    But he won't come out for me,
    If only I could catch him
    I would have him for my tea.

    I think I'll try to net him
    But now he's just dissappeared from sight,
    So now I know one thing is for certain
    That ol' trout won't be on my dinner plate tonight.

    If Gordon had John's book "Synthetic Flies" he just might be able to put a trout on his plate. Just started reading it and great info and Insight ...Thank you John and Thank you Michael for re-publication ... I hope you have more of John's writings to re-publish!
