The all-new Version 5 Personal Furling Machine is now available.
Same high quality and attention to detail with several improvements! Over 500,000 leaders have been furled with our Production and Personal Furling Machines!
Following the success of our Production Furling Machines, we've developed this machine with the goal of creating a quality machine at an affordable price. These machines produce professional-quality furled leaders or tenkara lines. The new Version 5 model improvements include improved shafts, gears, hook design and hook attachment.
Features:
This machine will pay for itself quickly considering the cost of commercial furled tenkara lines ($25) and furled leaders ($15) and you can produce exactly the taper, length and weight you want with either two or three legs! Note that most commerical furled leaders have two legs. Three legged leaders and tenkara lines are less stretchy and have a smaller cross-section than an equivalent two legged leader. This results in better wind penetration and less drift drag.
If you are just learning to furl, we recommend making several two legged leaders or lines to learn the process. There is lots of information on how to furl two legged leaders and lines on the Web (but be aware, there are as many ways to furl as there are fish in the stream!). Then, when you are ready to try three legged furls, read our free booklet Furling Three Leg Leaders, Tenkara Lines and Fly Lines to learn how.
Typical Setups:
Figure 1: Mounted to end of furling board - note the orientation of the machine, this is the way we normally set them up
Figure 2: Mounted to hand-held cradle, note the mounting plate is reversed from Figure 1
Designed and Manufactured by The Eclectic Angler in the USA!
PLEASE NOTE: Our machines were refined over 10 years by professional furlers turning out tens of thousands of leaders a year. We offer a no-nonsense guarantee and our machines are high quality and refined.

Been doing this for a number of years now using different gadgets and mechanisms. Got one in 2017 and have not look elsewhere to do my furled leaders. I have refined my method to use only 2 of the hooks, but my ability to produce them is substantially faster. I have 3 sons and 2 SnL all fly fish. I crank out a number of theses during the holidays an give them out as stocking stuffers. Got 4 G-sons so may need to make more.
This is a great product and very well built. Nothing out there like this unless you build it yourself.

This is a well designed and engineered machine that makes furling a joy. I set it up on a 10' board with all the appropriate stops for 9.5' and 7.5 foot leaders. It paid for itself in a couple of days. It took me a morning to get it right, but that was about it. It's a great tool that makes great furled leaders. I don't know why anyone would want to use anything else. No memory. Just beautifully constructed, tapered leaders that you can make any color you want. Thanks a heap.

I have been making furled leaders with this unit for 3 weeks now and I have to say it really helped me out with getting the tension correct with each leg. The V2 unit that I have has the grooves in the posts and makes it really easy to transfer strands to. Ive made about 30 leaders now, 2 strands so far, and they get better as I learn more. Well built little unit.

Nice machine and is working better for me as I get more experienced.
The edges are rough on the posts, which when using fine threads can cut them.
The posts work well but, could be spaced further apart for easier setup and could help in keeping the lines separated.
Smooth machine, and is working nicer as I get used to making lines.

The Eclectic Angler reply 2/2018:
The new Version 4 machine has actual bent wire hooks rather than the milled slots the V2 design had. These hooks can be retrofitted to the earlier design. Email me to inquire about options (DIY or return to me for the update).

Trevor, thank you for your feedback. Your machine was one of the first batch with the new hook design. I discovered the potential rough edges and have fixed that on new machines. I was using a polishing mechanism to smooth the edges and it was not 100% effective. I'm happy to replace your machine with one of the new models if you would like. I'll pay postage both ways.
As for the size and spacing of the machine... This machine is based on my Production Furling Machine and is exactly the same size. The tradeoff for a larger machine is, as the machine gets larger, the body plates and gears must be larger and larger gears cost quite a bit more.
I designed this machine to work will with a 1"x6" furling board (standard lumber yard pine board). I've built larger machines on custom order and even with the hooks spaced further apart, keeping the legs separated at the tip end is still a challenge (this is with a machine that has the hooks 4" apart (2" to the center hook). The best ways to keep the legs separated are 1) to make sure you have good tension, any slack can be a problem and 2) use some form of a separator at the tip end. I use a cork with shallow grooves filed into the edges. For 2 leg leaders, these are 180° apart, for 3 legged they are 120° apart. This is actually a very common technique for rope making and furling leaders. Try this out, it makes a big difference.
Thanks,
Michael

I have just started learning about how things were done in the old days. I invested in this Personal Furling machine to learn how to make my own horsehair leader and loop eyes for blind eye hooks, to cut som costs.
The machine works great and is easy to use, once you figure out how to do it. To me it was quite difficult as I never had seen or done this before, so a manual or a description on how to, would have been nice.
Solid construction. Good value for the money, fast shipping and grate service.

Thank you for the review of the machine. We offer a free PDF on furling 3 strand leaders with instructions as well as a DVD by the "furling Queen" Kathy Scott to teach you how to furl. Furling horse hair leaders and eyes is a different art altogether and is what our Walton's Machines are designed for. Darrel Martin's book "The Fly-Fisher’s Craft" has an excellent treatment of horse hair furling.

Michael

The Personal Furling Machine Is well thought out and excellent quality. The advantages of a three strand furl are immediately apparent to me. I purchased one for myself and another for a friend. They will get quite a work out as we experiment with different ideas and I have no doubts that they will hold up well.
