This special Workshop is for members of the Malden Anglers fly fishing club in Malden, MA
The Workshop will be held on Sunday February 16, 2014 from 10am to 2pm at the Malden Angler's Club House. Please pre-register before 2/7/2014. If you would like to register after this date, please contact Michael to make sure there is available space.
Reelsmith Michael Hackney will start with a short history of the fishing reel then proceed with an overview of the tools and techniques you'll use to build your fly reel. The Workshop includes one of our custom reel kits and all supplies, tools and instruction needed to complete it. Please wear old clothing that you won't mind getting a little dirty. Bring a magnifying headset if you use one, you'll be working with small screws and components.
About the Reel
You'll be building a special raised pillar reel designed for 3 to 5wt trout rods. It is based on the classic Philbrook & Payne design. The reel features aluminum plates and foot with brass pillars and screws for an elegant touch. This reel has my new click check influnced by the early Pflueger Medallist "plunger" check. Take a look at the photographs of the reel and it's internals above.

an enjoyable workshop, I learned a lot. You get out what you put into it, so the more you are willing to do, the better the reel will be. The reel we picked to built doesn't have a drag and can't be palmed, so it isn't for bringing a tarpon to hand, but should be lots of fun for the smaller stuff.

There were 10 of us at our fishing club that got together for a workshop. We had a great time building our reels and learned a lot. Michael is an excellent teacher with plenty of patience.
He provided all the material and tools that we needed. His instructions were simple and straight forward, I am glad that I organized the workshop.
